Broadband internet access is the way to go!

In our area, I strongly recommend Optimum Online, a service of Cablevision, for power users.  If you are comfortable with AOL, you can continue to use AOL with Optimum Online or you may want to use AT&T's broadband offering - AT&T/Yahoo! DSL.  They provide an AOL-like experience with some content filtering for children and other services not available from Optimum Online.

High-speed, always-on internet access is essential to enjoying the internet.  No waiting for page loads while surfing, and file downloads are 50+ times faster than a dial-up line!  While not inexpensive ($45 - $50/month for Optimum Online depending on your cable TV service level, and slightly lower rates for AT&T/Yahoo! DSL), it is not much more expensive than dial-up plus an extra phone line.

What can we do for you?  We can help you get your order right, and deal with Cablevision or AT&T to get your installation done.  Mostly, however, we will tune your computers to get the most out of your broadband connection.  You can do it yourself, particularly if your computer is less than two years old and runs Windows XP.  The "self install" kits are well designed for a novice user, and they do have telephone support available.

Once you have one computer connected to broadband, putting in a network to share the connection among multiple computers is the next step.  Optimum Online may try to sell you additional modems - at an additional monthly subscription charge - but don't do it!  Putting in a network will cost well less than one year's subscription fee for the second modem - and there are added advantages like file and printer sharing (see our networking section for more info).

Don't like Cablevision?  AT&T DSL from AT&T/Yahoo! may be available if you live close to town and costs slightly less than Optimum Online.  It includes some extras like web space if you want to create your own web page and some AOL-like features.  It is much faster than dial-up, but slower than Optimum Online - though for most usage the difference would not be noticeable.
